Congregation Votes to Embrace Open and Affirming Designation

Sunday, October 11th was an inspiring day for the St. Paul's congregation.  First, the vote to become an Open and Affirming congregation was unanimous.  Then the worship with guest preacher Malcolm Himschoot was emotional and uplifting as we ended the service singing "We Shall Overcome" while holding hands in a great circle that filled the sanctuary.

Our Open and Affirming Statement

Adopted at the Congregational Meeting of October 11th, 2009

  • We, the members of St. Paul's United Church of Christ believe that all people are created in God’s image and thus are loved and blessed equally by God.

  • We take seriously the scriptures which command us “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." Jesus said, "You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live." (Luke 10:25-28).

  • We invite and welcome into our community persons of every gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, ability, age, race, nationality, economic and social status, faith background, marital standing and family structure.

  • In our community of faith all people are encouraged to participate and share their talents and energy in worship and sacraments, leadership positions, ordained ministry, lay ministry, learning, service, mission and fellowship.

  • Therefore, no matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome in this United Church of Christ.
