St. Paul's United Church of Christ
Learning and Growing in a Progressive Spirit

What is our worship like?

It's traditional with a modern twist.  If you come to a Sunday morning service, you'll be greeted in the back of our historic sanctuary and given a worship bulletin which outlines the service.  You can pick any seat you want in our padded pews, sit down while the music is playing, and look the place over.

We start with a welcome, some music, a responsive reading, and then sing a song from a book of traditional and contemporary hymns that are gender balanced in images of God and that includes songs from many cultures. After our first song, we usually invite the children forward for a children's message and then send them to Christian Exploration Class or, in summer, send them to supervised play. Then we greet each other, share joys and concerns, and have silent and spoken prayers. We collect an offering (our guests are not expected to contribute, but may) and pray over it.  Then we hear a Bible passage and our pastor walks amidst the pews delivers a 15-20 minute sermon telling stories, offering thoughts, and asking questions. We finish with a song or two and go have snacks and conversation.

Open Communion

We offer the ritual of Communion every first Sunday of the month.  All are welcome to join regardless of church membership, age, or confession.  We just want to know that you are coming in respect and sincerity, seeking God in your life.  We offer the juice and bread as powerful symbols of the taking in the power of the Christ Presence into our lives. It is an offering of God to us and it is our offering to God of ourselves.
